15 Apr | Cotton Quality: Staple Length

The “staple length“, this means the length of the single fiber, is a decisive benchmark for the quality of the cotton. It determines how well and finely the cotton can be spun into yarn. Until the invention of machine testing, ordered classifiers only examined the cotton manually for their length (and other quality characteristics). For this purpose, a sample is pulled from the cotton and a fiber bundle is created using a specific technique. Then schemes as shown in the pictures are used for exact length determination. Even today, manual classing is still of significance, especially when it comes to disputes.

ICA Bremen will deliver its popular training course, ‚Cotton Classing & Testing’ training from June 25-July 2, 2019 in the Cotton Exchange Building in Bremen, Germany.
